Thunder but No Lightning on the Map? What to Check

If you hear thunder, go indoors even when the lightning map is empty. Thunder and an empty display can occur together because the map only shows reports it has received and can display. Once sheltered, check the time window, selected sources, coverage and delivery delay.

Check lightning near you

Act on the thunder first

Thunder is the sound produced when lightning rapidly heats the air. A map does not need to confirm it before you take shelter. The National Weather Service advises going indoors when thunder is audible, and waiting at least 30 minutes after the last lightning or thunder before returning outside.

Use the map from shelter to understand recent reports. Do not wait outside for a dot to appear, or treat a refresh as a safety check. The next flash can occur in a different place from the previous one. Follow your local weather service's warnings and advice about the storm.

The report may still be on its way

The flash time and the time a report appears on Boltwatch are different. GOES observations over the Americas and adjacent oceans usually reach the map about a minute after detection. Delivery can take longer. Seeing the flash or hearing its thunder locally can therefore happen before its report is visible.

Meteosat data over Europe, Africa and surrounding regions arrives in ten-minute products, with delivery time on top. A flash near the start of a product can be more than ten minutes old when it appears. The satellite's continuous observation does not mean Boltwatch receives every flash instantly. Check the source and displayed delay.

Reloading cannot make a provider release its next batch sooner. If a source is delayed or unavailable, the map may show older data or a gap. An absence of reports during that period is different from a confirmed absence of lightning.

Check the time window and source settings

Look at the selected time window. A short window can exclude older reports. Try 30 minutes or one hour to understand earlier activity, while remembering that this also includes flashes that happened farther back in time. More visible dots after that change do not mean the storm has suddenly become more active.

Open map settings and check the sources. If the source that covers your region is switched off, its reports will not appear. In northern Europe, FMI ground-network observations and Meteosat satellite observations provide different views. In the Americas, GOES-East and GOES-West cover different areas. Choose available sources appropriate to the region.

Check where the map is centred and what it covers

Make sure the map is showing the place you are checking. A saved view or a city page can begin at a different position from your actual location. Tap Near me and allow browser location access if you want distances from where you are. Zoom out to see activity outside the current view.

Boltwatch's available sources do not give complete worldwide coverage. Parts of Asia and Oceania remain outside the current map coverage. Even inside a provider's wider view, individual flashes may be missed. A source name appearing in settings is not a guarantee that every location has complete observations or that its feed is currently up to date.

A lightning report is not a record of every ground impact

GOES and Meteosat detect light from lightning, including activity inside clouds. Their mapped flash locations do not identify which building or street was struck. Ground sensors use another observation method. The same storm can therefore look different between services, especially when their time windows, source filters or update times differ.

When comparing maps, read their legends and timestamps instead of looking only for an identical dot. A different count does not resolve what happened at one property. Keep the practical next step simple: use official warnings for hazards, and use received lightning reports for context. Boltwatch does not issue an all-clear from an empty map or quiet feed.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe outside if the lightning map is empty?
An empty map does not mean it is safe outside. If you hear thunder, go indoors and follow your local weather service's advice.
Why can I hear thunder before a lightning dot appears?
Reports take time to reach the map. GOES usually reaches Boltwatch about a minute after detection; Meteosat arrives in ten-minute products plus delivery time. A report may also be missed or outside current coverage.
Will refreshing fix an empty lightning map?
Refreshing cannot make a provider send a report sooner. Check the source selection, time window, location, coverage and displayed delay from indoors.
